Occupational therapists utilize specialized manual interventions to prepare clients for ideal occupational performance. The goal to increase tissue pliability through connective tissue manipulation will help to reduce muscle tightness and fascial restrictions; by promoting fluid flow for tissue health. Otherwise known as “skin rolling” this technique can be incredibly effective in normalizing the blood, nerve, and lymphatic flow into and out of the restricted areas. Once the restrictions are freed up THEN normalization of posture and movement will be possible. Once this can be instituted into everyday life; quality of life and freedom of movement will equal independence in everyday activities.
For example: A male with testicular and pelvic pain who has difficult with sexual intercourse is found to have tight glutes and hamstrings. After evaluating a patients’ posture, body mechanics, and tissue pliability, an OT clinically reasons CTM would effectively help this pt. quickly achieve their goals.
