To most Rockford residents; known simply as “the bike path”, the paved Rock River Recreation Trail winds throughout downtown Rockford and environs, following the east bank of the Rock River through Shorewood Park and Martin Memorial Park. There are about 6 miles of paved trail, while another 10 miles (depending on where you begin) follow along roads. The best place to begin is at Whitman Street bridge.  To the North you will pass the “Rock Family”, the Nicholas Conservatory, the duck pond and the symbol to name just a few things.  The river runs along the path causing a breeze on the warmest days.  Music and food trucks in the summer, gorgeous colors in the fall and the winter brings a light display that is simply breathtaking.  Ride your bike, jog or simply walk and enjoy the river, the fresh air and the relaxing atmosphere!  Who knows, you may find a painted rock hidden among the scenery which you can keep or hide for someone else to find.
