Why Pelvic Floor Therapy
Our therapists are licensed practitioners who are trained experts in improving musculature dysfunction. Pelvic Floor Therapists can be PT’s or OT’s that are specifically trained in Pelvic Floor muscle dysfunction.
We have extensive knowledge and understanding of the muscles as well as the structures of the pelvis, abdomen, hips, legs, and organs. We acknowledge how the interactions of muscle and pelvic structures can affect your quality of life.
What Does a Pelvic Floor Evaluation Entail?
- A typical pelvic floor evaluation is one hour long. You will have filled out an extensive questionnaire regarding your bowel and bladder habits and/or pain complaints. Your therapist will spend time discussing your medical history and current complaint.
- Your therapist will then use pictures and other visual aides to educate you about the muscles, pelvis, spine and organs that can be involved in pelvic floor and abdominal symptoms.
- Behaviors or habits can affect or compound your symptoms so your therapist will explain how to use a 3 day voiding log to assist you in controlling your bowel and bladder function.
- The physical evaluation consists of looking at your posture, range of motion, core and extremity strength to assess any muscle weakness and/or tenderness. An internal pelvic floor muscle exam is also a vital part of the exam as these muscles aide in supporting the pelvic organs.
- The treatment plan is determined by YOU and your therapist after a complete evaluation and will be reviewed with you during each session.
- Most Pelvic Floor therapy treatments are performed 1-2 times per week for 6 – 8 weeks for one hour sessions.
- The number of visits per week will decrease as you gain more independence and progress with your home program.
What Should I Wear?
On your first visit, you can wear anything. Your therapist will recommend what to wear for the next visit.
